  • How do private music lessons work?
Private music lessons are one-on-one sessions tailored to each student's individual needs and goals. Unlike in traditional education, there is more flexibility in pacing and in the materials covered. The student shares responsibility for preparing material to cover in the lesson by practicing and setting personal goals. Pacing of materials is adjusted to each student's needs and concepts are taught giving the student the time they need to generate a deep understanding. Lessons typically include a mix of technique, music theory, and repertoire.
  • What can I expect during my first private music lesson?
During your first private music lesson, my goal is to get an understanding of your learning style, motivation, musical background, goals, and interests. Students new to music or new to the instrument will start with learning a few physical foundational skills, such as holding the instrument, and will gain general information about how the instrument works and what to expect with future lessons. For students with prior experience, the lesson will include an assessment of your current skill level and strengths and areas of focus for technique will be identified. I will recommend learning materials such as method books, scales, etudes, and repertoire to form a personalized plan of learning to help you achieve your musical aspirations.
  • Where are the lessons held?
Lessons can be held either online or in-person. In-person lessons typically take place in my home studio near the Columbia City historic district in Seattle, WA. I may be able to teach the lesson in your home pending availability and if the commute is less than 15min. Please contact me directly for more information about lessons in your home. Lessons may also be taken online exclusively or in combination with in-person lessons, providing flexibility and convenience.
  • What are some effective practice techniques for music students?
Effective practice techniques for music students include setting specific goals for each practice session, breaking down difficult passages into smaller sections, using a metronome, and recording practice sessions to track progress. Additionally, students should focus on quality over quantity, ensuring they practice mindfully and with intention.
  • Is it too late to start learning music as an adult?
It's never too late to start learning music! Adult students of all ages and skill levels are welcome to enroll and experience the many benefits of learning to play an instrument. Whether you're picking up an instrument for the first time or returning to music after a break, these personalized lessons are designed to help you achieve your musical goals and enjoy the learning process.
  • What factors determine if a child is ready for music lessons?
Several factors can determine if a child is ready for music lessons, including their age, level of focus, interest in music, and reading skills. I usually recommend starting private lessons for kids ages 5+, but some younger children may be ready if they have high interest and can recognize letters A-G of the alphabet. I take time to assess each child's readiness individually to ensure a positive and engaging learning experience.
